Cross-Border & International Weddings

Donegal Is Closer
Than You Think

Rockhill House Estate sits in the hills above Letterkenny, thirty minutes from City of Derry Airport and ninety minutes from Belfast. For couples from Northern Ireland, Britain, or further afield, it is more accessible than many venues considerably closer to home — and considerably more remarkable than any of them.

We have welcomed couples from Derry and Tyrone, from Dublin and Sligo, from London, New York, Sydney, and Toronto. We know what it takes to plan a wedding from a distance, and we take that part of our job as seriously as the day itself.

Cross-Border Couples

Thirty minutes from Derry. An evening worth the drive.

Rockhill House is thirty minutes from Derry city centre — closer than many venues in Donegal itself, and considerably more accessible than most comparable country house estates anywhere in the North West. For couples from Co. Derry, Co. Tyrone, Co. Fermanagh, Co. Antrim, or Co. Down, this is not a destination wedding. It is simply a very good venue that happens to be across the border.

We have welcomed a great many cross-border weddings at Rockhill. Treasa and Kenny, whose winter wedding was featured in One Fab Day, married at St Columba’s Church in Co. Derry before coming to Rockhill for their reception — a journey of less than an hour, and an evening that their guests still talk about.

One practical note for Northern Ireland couples: notice of intention to marry need only be given 28 days in advance in Northern Ireland, compared to three months in the Republic. If you are planning your ceremony across the border, this shorter window may make the logistics considerably more workable. Get in touch and we will walk you through it.

“Kenny was blown away by Rockhill House the minute he walked in. He has a keen interest in old buildings and especially those with a history behind them. It had a very grand aesthetic whilst having a feeling of cosiness.”

International & Diaspora Weddings

Planning from abroad. We have done this before.

Donegal has a particular pull for the Irish diaspora — couples whose families left this part of Ireland generations ago, who want to bring everyone back to where it began. Rockhill House, with its 17th-century history and 100 acres of Donegal landscape, is often the answer to that particular question.

We have planned weddings with couples based in New York, Boston, Toronto, Sydney, London, and throughout mainland Europe. The distance is never the obstacle it appears. We communicate well, we understand the logistics, and we know which parts of the process need your attention early and which can wait. Our 27 bedrooms mean that families flying in from different countries arrive at the same place and stay together — the whole weekend in one house, which is the point.

City of Derry Airport has direct connections to London and several UK cities. Dublin Airport, three hours south, connects to virtually everywhere. Neither is a complicated journey once you are in Ireland, and we are happy to help with recommendations for transfers, accommodation for overflow guests in Letterkenny, and anything else the logistics require.

The Setting

Why Donegal

Light, landscape, and the Wild Atlantic Way

Donegal has a quality of light that photographers describe and couples discover for themselves. It is the northern Atlantic light — crisp, clear, and flattering in a way that southern light rarely is. It makes photographs look different here. Not better produced, but more real.

The county sits on the Wild Atlantic Way and was named by National Geographic Traveller as one of the coolest places on the planet. The landscape around Rockhill House — wooded hills, the river valley below Letterkenny, the Atlantic coast within forty minutes — gives your photographer a range of backdrops that a single estate elsewhere simply cannot provide.

Donegal is also, as anyone who has been here will tell you, exceptionally good at hospitality. The welcome is genuine, the food is exceptional, and the place has a way of making people feel they have arrived somewhere that matters. That is difficult to manufacture and impossible to fake.

In the era of the Stewarts, a wedding at Rockhill was — by all accounts — a celebrated affair: flower-strung halls, fine food and wine, warm embraces, and a night that lasted into the morning. That tradition is still very much alive here.

“The emergence of a rainbow as we arrived at Rockhill for photos just couldn’t have been more perfect. The house and grounds are stunning and finished to the highest quality — it exudes romance.”

What to Expect

Planning From a Distance

The things couples ask us most often when they are planning from abroad.

Communication

We answer every enquiry ourselves. Time zone differences are manageable — we are used to communicating with couples in North America, Australia, and across Europe. Nothing is handed off to a third party or a booking system.

Site Visits

We strongly recommend a visit before booking. Most couples who come to see Rockhill make their decision that day. We can arrange a site visit around a wider trip to Ireland — many couples combine it with a visit to family or a short break in Donegal.

The 27 Bedrooms

For families flying in from different countries, having everyone in the same house is the single most important thing. Twenty-seven bedrooms means your closest people wake up here together the morning after — still in one place, still part of it.

The Menu Tasting

The pre-wedding menu tasting is a highlight of the planning season and a good reason to visit. Most couples based abroad arrange it as part of a longer trip to Ireland, and we time it around your schedule.

A Practical Note on Registration

Republic of Ireland

A minimum of 3 months’ notice to the HSE is required for all weddings in the Republic, regardless of where the couple are based. Non-resident couples give notice by post, followed by an in-person appointment. We will point you to the right registrar and tell you what to bring.

Northern Ireland

Notice to the GRO is required 28 days before the ceremony — considerably shorter than the Republic. If you are a Northern Ireland couple planning to marry in a Derry church and hold your reception at Rockhill, this is the timeline that applies to your ceremony registration.

International Couples

Couples based outside Ireland should contact the General Register Office in the Republic to confirm specific requirements. Additional documentation may be required if either party has been previously married. Get in touch and we will guide you through the process.
